Beta Kidz Behaviour Management
Strategy
"The Traffic Light
Technique"
Background:
In 2005, Aimee
from Beta Kidz Consultancy designed a behaviour management strategy called "The Traffic Light Technique".
From her experience working with a number of children across an array of age groups, Aimee saw a need to develop a
modified approach to Time-out where visual cues were used so that children from 2 years (sometimes earlier) through
to the end of primary school could fully understand why they were being put in
time-out.
Key
concepts:
-
The approach ensures
consistency for both the child and parent
-
It is suitable for
ages 2 (sometimes earlier) to 12 years and ensures understanding via its visual
cues
-
It provides a
well-known object (the common traffic light) as the basis for its visual cues
-
Children quickly
adapt to the strategy and get use to the colours which can then be used as a verbal strategy when
out
-
It is simple to use
and practical
-
It comes with an easy
to follow verbal guide for parents (specific verbal cues are essential to aide the success of the
technique)
-
It is portable, so
that prior to children being familiar with the verbal cues, you can take your traffic light
out and about
Success:
So far Beta Kidz
Consultancy has had a 99% success rate with this technique. Success does however depend on parents being consistent
with applying the concept.
